Twitter's 280-character limit went live for users on November 7, 2017. Tweets in Japanese, Korean, and Chinese languages remain at the 140 character limit currently. Certain characters, including CJK, emoji and most Unicode symbols, count as two characters under the new limit. Twitter's Product Manager Aliza Rosen first announced plans to expand to 280-character tweets in September 2017. |
Twitter is about brevity. It's what makes it such a great way to see what's happening. Tweets get right to the point with the information or thoughts that matter. That is something we will never change, wrote Aliza Rosen. Twitter's research showed that the 140-character limit was a major cause of frustration for people Tweeting in English, but was not for those Tweeting in Japanese. |
